Traditional helicopters use a tail rotor to counteract torque created by the main rotor, but that system consumes a significant amount of engine power without contributing lift. The K-MAX eliminates the tail rotor completely by using counter-rotating rotors that naturally cancel torque, allowing nearly all available power to go directly into lifting cargo.
The result is one of the most efficient heavy-lift helicopters ever built. Despite weighing just over 5,000 pounds itself, the K-MAX can carry external loads of up to 6,000 pounds.
