The Little Things Matter When You’re Just Starting Out
When you’re starting from zero, it’s not always the big features that make the biggest impact. Often, it’s the smallest decisions that end up setting you apart.
Instagram is a perfect case of this. They focused heavily on user experience right from the beginning, especially on mobile where speed and flow are everything.
One clever move came from a lesson they took from Gmail. On Gmail, when you type in your email, the system starts preloading your inbox in the background. Instagram applied the same idea to photo uploads.
While a user was editing or writing a caption, Instagram began uploading the photo quietly behind the scenes. If the user hit “Post,” the upload was already halfway done. It felt fast and seamless. If the user changed their mind, the system just tossed the data. No harm.
That one detail created a smoother, more responsive experience. It made people feel like the app just worked. And when you’re competing for attention, that feeling is everything.
It’s proof that when you’re building something new, the small things aren’t small at all. They stack up. They create momentum. And they might be the reason people keep coming back.
