Elon Musk’s story, as told by Walter Isaacson, begins with a difficult childhood. His father, Errol Musk, was controlling and, in Elon’s words, “evil incarnate.” Growing up, Elon often tried to protect his mother from his father’s anger, and the pain he went through shaped the fierce ambition he carries today.
Errol claimed to be an emerald mine owner and often twisted the truth. Elon’s early life was full of emotional chaos, and each company he’s built—from Zip2 to buying Twitter for $44 billion—feels like a way to take control of the mess he grew up in.
But that past still lingers. Elon’s bursts of anger, his need to be in charge, and even the luxury car he once gave his father as a strategic gift all hint at unresolved wounds. Isaacson leaves us with a powerful question: Does greatness come in spite of pain, or because of it?
