Jordan Belfort, the real-life “Wolf of Wall Street,” became widely known not just for his high-flying sales career but for one sharp, revealing question: “Sell me this pen.”
It sounds simple, even random. But it’s a test — not of how well someone can describe an object, but how well they can sell understanding and urgency.
The most common mistake? People jump into features:
“It’s a great pen. Smooth ink. Comfortable grip.”
Belfort says that’s the wrong approach. A good salesperson doesn’t just describe a product. They create demand.
His version of a right answer starts by identifying need. For example:
“Before I do that, can I ask — are you in the market for a pen?”
Then they build urgency, frame the pen as the solution, and move toward closing the sale.
It’s not about the pen. It’s about how well you understand persuasion.
And that’s why it’s become one of the most famous sales exercises in the world.
