China has announced plans to construct a deep-sea research facility, often referred to as a “deep-sea space station,” approximately 2,000 meters beneath the South China Sea. This project aims to study “cold seep” ecosystems—unique underwater environments where chemicals like methane and hydrogen sulfide seep from the ocean floor—and to explore potential methane hydrate reserves, which are estimated to be around 70 billion tons in the region.
The facility is designed to accommodate up to six scientists for month-long missions, equipped with advanced life-support systems to ensure their safety and operational efficiency. Construction is expected to start soon, with the station expected to be operational by 2030.
